Why downgrading QNAP NAS firmware is not recommended
Applicable Products
QTS, QuTS hero, QuTScloud
Overview
Downgrading your NAS firmware to an earlier version after an upgrade may compromise system stability, data integrity, and compatibility with applications or services.
Key Risks of Downgrading:
Data Integrity Issues
Newer firmware versions may change system configurations or data structures. These changes may not be recognized by older firmware versions, potentially leading to data loss, inconsistencies, or inaccessible files.
Application Dependency and Compatibility
Applications or services updated with the newer firmware may rely on newer system libraries or behaviors. Running them on older firmware may cause them to malfunction, crash, or fail to start.
Loss of Security and Features
Downgrading removes critical security patches and new features, leaving your NAS vulnerable to threats and limiting functionality.
Recommendation
QNAP strongly advises against firmware downgrades. If you experience issues after a firmware update and feel that a downgrade is necessary, please first contact the QNAP Helpdesk for technical assessment and guidance.
