Overview
When a TR-004 is connected to a macOS computer, the volume may stop mounting even though the RAID group appears healthy in QNAP External RAID Manager. At the same time, the Disk Info page may show a Warning status for one physical disk. This usually indicates a physical disk health issue rather than a purely logical RAID issue.
A healthy RAID status does not guarantee that every disk is healthy. If one disk has degraded S.M.A.R.T. attributes, macOS may detect repeated I/O errors or timeouts and therefore fail to mount the volume, even though the RAID group appears normal in External RAID Manager.
Root cause
- The Disk Info page monitors the physical health of each drive.
- A Warning status means one or more S.M.A.R.T. attributes (for example, bad sectors or reallocated sectors) have crossed the drive vendor’s safety threshold.
- The RAID Group view represents the logical data structure. It can still appear healthy while one physical disk is already degraded.
- A single degraded disk can cause mount instability, slow I/O, or mount failure on macOS, even if the RAID group status is normal.
Solution
Step 1: Protect your data
- Back up critical data immediately if any files are still accessible from the TR-004 volume.
- To reduce the risk of data loss, avoid repeated mount attempts, write operations, or prolonged stress testing on a disk that shows a Warning status before you complete a backup.
Step 2: Check disk health in QNAP External RAID Manager
- Open QNAP External RAID Manager on your macOS computer.
- Go to the Disk Info page.
- Identify the disk that shows a Warning status and review the detailed S.M.A.R.T. attributes.
Step 3: Decide whether to replace the disk
- Check critical S.M.A.R.T. attributes such as
Reallocated Sector Count or similar indicators. - If the
Reallocated Sector Count value (or similar critical indicators) is high or increasing, plan to replace that drive as soon as possible. - After you replace the degraded disk, allow the RAID group to rebuild or resync completely before performing heavy read/write operations.
Step 4: Contact QNAP support if the volume still does not mount
- Go to the QNAP Service Portal.
- Create a support ticket and describe the symptoms, including:
- macOS version
- TR-004 connection type (for example, USB type and cable)
- Any macOS error messages or disk utility messages
- Attach relevant system logs or screenshots from QNAP External RAID Manager, including the RAID Group and Disk Info pages.
- Ask QNAP support to analyze the interaction between the TR-004 controller and your macOS host to identify the cause of the mount failure.

- Continued operation on a degraded disk may lead to permanent data loss.
